NEPTUNE TOWNSHIP FIRE DISTRICT #2 (OCEAN GROVE FIRE DISTRICT) MISSION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The mission of the Neptune Township Fire District #2 (also known as the Ocean Grove Fire District) is to provide the highest level of fire suppression, fire prevention and fire inspection services to the Ocean Grove Historic District within the Township of Neptune.
The District employs a single full-time paid firefighter and relies on dozens of dedicated and trained volunteer frrefighers. The District is comprised of three fire companies; Washington Fire Company founded in 1879, the E.H. Stokes Fire Company founded in 1886 and Eagle Hook & Ladder Fire Company founded in 1892. Both Washington and Stokes Companies are located at the Olin Street Firehouse located at the comer of Olin Street and Central Avenue. Eagle Company is located at the Eagle Firehouse located at the comer of Main and Whitefield Avenues.
The Fire District’s primary responsibility is fire suppression and answers approximately 200 fire calls annually. Due to the close proximity of homes and businesses in the historic district, the three fire companies take great pride in our record of rapid and effective response to extinguish frre.
The District also staffs a Fire Prevention Bureau with a part-time Fire Official and part-time Fire Inspector to enforce the provisions of the State Uniform Fire Code. The Fire Bureau routinely inspects multiple dwellings and commercial properties to ensure compliance. During the month of October, the Fire Bureau participates in Fire Prevention Month and conducts educational programs about fue prevention measures to take in the home.
The Fire District is governed by an elected five member Board of Fire Commissioners. The Commissioners meet monthly, usually on the 2nd Thursday of the month, at which time they review operations, discuss and approve capital improvements and equipment needs, and approve the payment of bills. The Board adopts an annual budget in conformance with the laws of the State ofNew Jersey as promulgated by the State Department of Community Affairs.
Members of the three frre companies annually select a Departmental Chief and two assistant chiefs. Each company also independently selects a Company Captain and two lieutenants. All officers are sworn into office at a New Year’s Day ceremony.
The Fire District staffs all three frre companies during times of severe weather conditions or when any other situation threatens to compromise the rapid response of frre fighters. Recently, in preparation of Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, the Fire District assisted in evacuation efforts both before and during the storms.
