In honor of all volunteers, especially those who helped Shark River Hills residents after Superstorm Sandy, Mayor Eric Houghtaling announced that the Township Committee adopted a resolution to rename Riverside Park to Volunteer Park.
The Township Committee will formally commemorate the renaming during a ceremony in the park on South Riverside Drive on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., the weekend before the first anniversary of the storm. At that time the newly installed park sign will be unveiled.
Mayor Houghtaling has announced that the Shark River Hills Property Owners’ Association will donate two memorial plaques to the Township for installation in the park. One plaque will serve as a thank you to the volunteers, as well as a reminder of the commitment of the impacted residents to rebuild and return to their homes. The second plaque will memorialize the date of the Superstorm.
The Property Owners’ Association is holding a Memorial Plaque Design Contest. Neptune Township residents are invited to submit their own original copy to be inscribed on the plaque memorializing the storm. A separate contest will be held amongst Neptune Middle School and High School students to honor the volunteers. Submissions must be made no later than September 23, 2013 via email to the Property Owners’ Association at srhpoa1@optonline.net. Additional information is available on their website.
The Property Owners’ Association is conducting a fundraising drive to cover the approximate $3,500 cost for the plaques.
